2022 Range Rover First Edition: The Luxury Off-Road Benchmark

For more than half a century, the powerful Range Rover has been the benchmark for vehicles that need to combine strong off-road performance with elegant luxury. The standard has been raised even further with the release of Land Rover’s brand-new fifth-generation model.

The outgoing model and the new one are similar in exterior appearance at first look. When working with a successful formula, major changes to the design are unnecessary and generally frowned upon (sorry BMW). The New Range Rover currently offers moderate hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with a fully electric version due in 2024.

Design and Effectiveness

The appearance of the Range Rover is evolving from rugged to fancy, and these design tweaks continue that journey. The 2022 model is ostentatious; take notice of the door highlights and cutting-edge tail lights.

Everything is flush with the body, and the style used is trendy and elegant. The Sunset Gold paint finish on the car is stunning and seems to shift colors depending on the light.

Once inside, you’ll find nothing but high-quality materials, including perforated semi-aniline leather 24-way motorized seats and the best upholstery. They include a variety of massage settings, including heating and cooling.

Driving the almost five-meter-long and two-meter-wide Range Rover along winding rural lanes might seem like you’re in a truck, but the high seating position provides a good view over the shrubs.

Technology and Equipment

There’s a lot of thought put into the refinement and ease of the backseat experience, too. There is a separate air conditioning system, and the power-adjustable windows feature automated shades for your privacy. A button allows them to open and close the sunroof, and the system’s many speakers ensure that they can take full use of the premium Meridian sound system. Two 11.4-inch high-definition touchscreens are installed in the back of the front seat backs and may be used separately. They work with anything that has an HDMI connector, and when combined with the Wi-Fi hotspot feature, even the back-seat passengers can enjoy the latest in-car entertainment.

Control the climate, lights, seats, blinds, and infotainment screens all from the 8-inch touchscreen built into the power-operated center armrest. When the cup symbol is pressed, the armrest opens to reveal two cup holders.

Final Thoughts

Any doubt about Range Rover’s ability to improve upon the legendary Land Rover was, of course, completely unfounded. That car is a work of art; it’s got everything we wanted in a showcase vehicle and more. In fact, the new Range Rover is packed with so much cutting-edge technology that Land Rover had to submit 125 patents to cover it all.

When we put the First Edition through its paces, we got a feel for the new Range Rover at its most impressive, with plenty of power, gold paint that expresses an opinion, and a luxurious interior. When it comes to shaking down cars, this may be a red herring at times; the more costly models hide the flaws that are present in cheaper trims.
