Arsenal and Celtic hero Charlie Nicholas has described Ange Postecoglou as a ‘modern-day version’ of Alex Ferguson, while he has also compared his impact in Scotland to Arsene Wenger’s on the Premier League.

It is serious praise for the Australian manager who has done a great job since arriving at Celtic in 2021.

Postecoglou’s appointment was not met with unanimous praise by any means, but he has been excellent in the role, winning the Scottish Premiership title last year and currently sitting nine points clear at the top of the table with 26 wins from 28 games.

Nicholas has been thoroughly impressed with the 57-year-old and compared him to the greatest manager in Premier League history as a result.

‘Ange Postecoglou is a modern-day version of Sir Alex Ferguson. That is what he is, Nichols wrote for the Scottish Daily Express. ‘He is just a relentless winner. Ange is so simplistic. He has an incredible motivational side.

‘We know he doesn’t speak to his players a lot. He talks to them individually on the training pitch but not really off it, but is remarkable how tough he has made this Celtic team both physically and mentally.

‘You never really seen Ange over-praising his players. He just gets on with it and moves on to the next challenge.

‘It was like Sir Alex after he had led Aberdeen to the Scottish Cup against Rangers. He ranted and raved on the pitch saying the performance was a disgrace although they lifted the cup Willie Miller and Alex McLeish were the only players to get pass marks.

‘Ange is just like that. He treats them mean to keep them keen. This manager has a style and has really got something special going at Celtic.’

Throwing in another tremendous compliment, Nicholas added: ‘He has simply grabbed the footballing industry in Scotland. It is not unlike Arsene Wenger when he went into Arsenal.’

Postecoglou has begun to attract the attention of clubs south of the border and is being linked with managerial jobs in the Premier League on a regular basis.

The latest potential destination to be touted for the Australian is Tottenham Hotspur, with Antonio Conte not expected to be in charge of the club next season.
