An Australian McDonald’s worker has gone viral after sharing her recipe for “Macca’s doughnuts”.
The employee, named Ella, filmed a video of herself making the unofficial menu item during a recent shift at the Golden Arches.
In the clip, Ella can be seen taking a plain burger bun – not one with sesame seeds – and scrunching it up into a ball.
She then places it into a deep fryer, which some viewers have pointed out is filled with rather unappealing oil, and leaves it to crisp up.
As the “doughnut” is bubbling away in the fryer, Ella then takes an empty coffee cup and begins making a sugar and cinnamon mixture.
When the doughnut is nice and crispy, she pulls it out of the fryer and places it in an empty burger box, then dumps the sugar mixture on top and shakes.
She finishes by topping the doughnut with chocolate sauce, concluding the treat gets a 9/10.
It’s not clear if Ella eats the creation, as the video comes to an abrupt halt.
Despite being just 18 seconds long, the clip has blown up, amassing almost a million views in a matter of days.
News.com.au has contacted McDonald’s Australia for comment.
Understandably, it has divided social media users, with many stating they’d love to try it as others lamented at the employee’s actions.
“Macca’s workers do everything but make the right order,” one scoffed.
“So creative,” another said.
Many in the comments said they used to do this when they worked at McDonald’s in the past and marvelled at the fact staff still make them.
“I use to do this all the time on overnights years ago,” one said.
“My dad used to do this when he worked at Macca’s,” another wrote.
“Ah the old trick – we did this years ago,” someone else posted.
Other former employees said they used to do something similar with a hot cake – as some called for the “Macca’s doughnut” to be added to menus.
“This should be on the menu,” one said.
“We need to be able to try this.” another wrote.
There were some who said that the “doughnut” didn’t exactly look appetising – as some also pointed out McCafe actually sells real doughnuts.
“That’s anything but a doughnut,” one said.
“But McDonald’s do doughnuts in their McCafe line,” another wrote.
“Proof the buns are a confectionery,” someone else commented.
It’s not the first time a McDonald’s employee has lifted the lid on what happens in the kitchens of the most famous burger joint in the world.
A US employee named Yanii detailed previously how she makes the brand’s Mocha drink, a combination of coffee and hot chocolate, in a video that has been viewed over 186,000 times.
But as Yanii – who often shares clips from her job on her TikTok account @kallme.yaniii – took viewers through the step-by-step process, people noticed something else.
“What I’m more concerned about is the crust around that coffee machine,” one said.
“The filth where the milk and coffee is coming out [is] nasty,” a second agreed.
“Bruh clean y’all machine,” another wrote.
“I’m surprised that machine is even up and running. Looks clogged,” someone else said.
Others pointed out there wasn’t a lot of skill involved in preparing the drink, which is also in Australia, compared to buying a mocha at a coffee shop or cafe.
