From work Christmas parties to conversations at the water cooler, the workplace has been the setting for many a flourishing romance.
But before you start planning your future with that guy from marketing, ask yourself a question: is he hot, or is he simply, ‘work hot’?
Musician Hannah Sands, recently shared a video explaining the concept.
She said: ‘Work hot is when you get a crush on someone you work with and you convince yourself they’re hot, but they’re just the cutest of the people that you work with.’
She said that, despite how smitten you may be, you ‘cannot trust’ this.
Hannah also warns that these people are ‘just a distraction from doing your job’ – which to be fair, we all welcome from time to time. One commenter joked: ‘Getting a work crush really is sometimes the ONLY way to survive.’
But it’s not just about looks. Hannah says that there can be a huge difference in someone’s work and home personality – you might find you really don’t like them outside of work, she says, having experienced this herself.
She said: ‘It can be fun for a minute, but it never ends well,’ she says.
Next time you find someone hot at work, ask yourself if there is genuine chemistry with the person, or whether they’re just ‘work hot’.
If it’s the former, proceed with caution.
Data from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) released in February 2022 shows that 75% of workers are open to the idea of dating a co-worker, despite the sense of taboo that’s still attached to it.
Dating and relationships coach Christiana Maxion previously told Metro.co.uk that if do you act on your work crush, be prepared if it doesn’t work out.
‘Try not to be bitter if it doesn’t work out or spread any gossip or hateful comments about the other person if you do split. It will be viewed as immature, unprofessional, and may hurt both yours and your former partner’s reputation.’
And, she adds: ‘Flirt in a discreet way. Remember, you are a professional.’
