Edgerunners’ Just Won Anime Of The Year

I remember a time when everyone had forgotten CDPR had ever even announced that Cyberpunk 2077 was getting a companion anime, as everyone was swept up in the game’s launch and its various issues, and we simply didn’t hear about it for an extremely long time.

Well, when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners finally did arrive from TRIGGER, it shocked everyone with its quality. It was far more than just a companion piece, but something that elevated the entire world of Night City, and was so popular it sparked a sales resurgence for the game itself two years after launch.

Now, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been honored with one of anime’s highest awards, as it has won Anime of the Year at the 2023 Anime Awards. It’s not an Emmy, but in the world of anime, it’s about as close as you get.

It’s a pretty interesting awards list, given that Edgerunners only took one other main award besides anime of the year, Best English voice acting by Zach Aguilar as David in Edgerunners. Otherwise, here’s the list, where Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan and SPY x FAMILY took home more awards individually:

  • Anime of the Year – Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
  • Best Anime Director – Haruo Sotozaki, Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
  • Best Anime Film – Jujutsu Kaisen 0
  • Best Anime Song – “The Rumbling” by SiM, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best Anime Score – Kohta Yamamoto and Hiroyuki Sawano, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best Comedy Anime – SPY x FAMILY
  • Best Fantasy Anime – Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
  • Best Romance Anime – Kaguya-sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic
  • Best Continuing Anime Series – One Piece
  • Best Animation – Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
  • Best Original Anime – Lycoris Recoil
  • Best Anime Character Design – Akira Matsushima, Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
  • Best New Anime Series – SPY x FAMILY
  • Best Main Anime Character – Eren Jaeger, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best Supporting Anime Character – Anya Forger, SPY x FAMILY
  • Best Action Anime – Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
  • Best Drama Anime – Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best Voice Acting Performance (Japanese) – Yuki Kaji, Eren Jaeger in Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best Voice Acting Performance (English) – Zach Aguilar, David Martinez in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
  • Best Anime Ending Sequence – “Comedy” by Gen Hoshino, Storyboard and Direction from Atsushi Nishigori, SPY x FAMILY
  • Best Anime Opening Sequence – “The Rumbling” by SiM, Storyboard and Direction from Takashi Kojima, Attack on Titan Final Season Part 2
  • Best “Must Protect at All Costs” Anime Character – Anya Forger, SPY x FAMILY

If you’re keeping score, that’s four awards for Demon Slayer, six for Attack on Titan and five for SPY x FAMILY, with two awards just for Anya Forger alone. Well-deserved.

There are no plans for a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This isn’t to say they won’t ever do an anime series again, but as we know, it’s hard to get second seasons out of TRIGGER specifically, and this was meant to be a one-off project. So just enjoy it as a complete tale.
