Cameron Monaghan — who portrays Jedi Knight Cal Kestis in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its upcoming sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor — has expressed interest in bringing the character to live-action.
During an interview with Screen Rant, Monaghan was asked his thoughts on the prospect of portraying Cal Kestis in a live-action Star Wars project. “Well of course there’s interest,” the actor replied. However, he was not at liberty to elaborate. “That’s about all I can say,” Monaghan laughed.
Interestingly, it was recently rumored that Disney and Lucasfilm were developing a live-action Star Wars series spinning out of the events of Fallen Order, with Monaghan attached to reprise his role as Cal. However, this remains unconfirmed, and neither company has addressed the rumors one way or another.
“Rumor, rumor, rumor, big rumor… Have to say that. Rumor, rumor — not confirmed. But, got this from somebody that I’ve trusted in the past, heard things [from] in the past, tells me this is a thing… Rumor is that there’s a Cal Kestis show in the works for Disney+,” Star Wars insider Kristian Harloff said. “The rumor is that [Cameron Monaghan has] actually signed on to play the character from Jedi: Fallen Order in a live-action series for Disney+. There’s no production dates set, but my source tells me that this is happening.”
While the rumor should certainly be taken with a grain of salt at this stage, the idea of Monaghan playing Cal in live-action at some point isn’t exactly far-fetched. After all, Cal was modeled after Monaghan’s likeness, with the actor also providing the character’s voice and motion capture. Furthermore, Fallen Order is considered canon to the Star Wars universe. On that note, while no Fallen Order characters — or any characters originating from Star Wars video games, for that matter — have made the jump to live-action as of yet, certain concepts established in the 2019 game have.
For instance, while Fallen Order did not introduce Inquisitors to the Star Wars universe, it did introduce their base, Fortress Inquisitorius, which is located on the moon Nur. Fortress Inquisitorius later appeared in the live-action Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fallen Order also marked the first appearance of a BD unit, with the droid BD-1 being Cal’s companion throughout the game. A BD unit (which was most likely not BD-1) later popped up in the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett. Another reason Cal’s live-action debut would not be entirely unprecedented is the fact that numerous recent live-action Star Wars projects have integrated characters originating from animated shows and, in the case of one Black Krrsantan, comic books.
Cal Kestis Will Return in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Fallen Order initially released for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 15, 2019. It was later made available for Google Stadia, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Set five years after the events of the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the game follows Cal, a Jedi Padawan who went into hiding after narrowly surviving Order 66. After a run-in with the Inquisitors, Cal is recruited by Jedi Knight Cere Junda (Debra Wilson) with the goal of rebuilding the Jedi Order, being promoted to Knight himself before all is said and done.
Monaghan is set to reprise his role as Cal in Fallen Order‘s upcoming sequel, Jedi: Survivor. The game is currently slated to release for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2023. Outside of the Star Wars franchise, Monaghan is known for portraying proto-Jokers (and twin brothers) Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska on Fox’s Batman prequel series Gotham. Monaghan’s most recent project is the thriller film Paradise Highway.
