First Dates’ Merlin Griffiths discharged from hospital amid cancer

First Dates star Merlin Griffiths has revealed he’s been discharged from hospital after having his stoma removed, stressing that his recovery from bowel cancer ‘will not be fast, but I’ll get there’.

In September 2021, the bartender known for appearing on the Channel 4 dating programme, shared that he had been diagnosed with bowel cancer with a stage three tumour.

The 47-year-old has continued to share updates with his followers on social media of his treatment, which included having a stoma, an opening that allows waste to be diverted out of the body.

Earlier this month, Merlin posted a photo of himself in his hospital bed, saying that it felt ‘very odd knowing all my insides are actually inside me again after 9 months of a stoma’.

He later revealed he was being discharged from hospital, sharing that it had been a ‘tough and fraught week’ for him.

‘Phew. Getting discharged from hopsital today. It’s been a tough and fraught week. Recovery will not be fast, but I’ll get there,’ he wrote. ‘And I’ve got much better TP at home! Thank you @nhsuhcw, exemplary as always. #bowelcancer #stoma #reversal #norectum #NHS.’

Several people wished Merlin will on the next stage of his recovery, including radio presenter Adele Roberts, who was previously diagnosed with bowel cancer before announcing that she was ‘cancer-free’.

‘Congratulations Merlin! Keep smashing it and so happy you’re on the mend 😍🥰 Thank you so much for sharing your recovery xx,’ she tweeted.

One person shared their own hospital experience with Merlin, writing: ‘Its always nice to go home after a stint in hospital i ( having had 50+ surgeries) know all to well hospital nights go on an on.’

‘Get well, get fit, then get that pub open mate 😉👍🍺. Great news!’ someone else said, while another Twitter user wrote: ‘Take care, wishing you a speedy and successful recovery.’

Almost two years ago, a tumour that measured at 4.5cm wide was found in Merlin’s bowel.

He underwent surgery in April last year, before suffering a frustrating setback in his recovery.

Speaking to in September 2022, he said: ‘I was operated on in April, late April, as you might recall.

‘It’s been a long, slow road to recovery. I got myself up and around [because] you’re supposed to do what’s called active recovery these days.’

Hailing the NHS as ‘amazing’ he continued: ‘That was all going well. I had a minor setback so I was in for a couple of procedures.’

Merlin explained that his body ‘doesn’t heal the same way it used to’ after undergoing radiotherapy, before stating at the time: ‘So now I’m under strict surgeon’s orders not to overdo it so active recovery takes a backseat. So the last six to eight weeks have been quite frustrating, largely having to cool my heels and not being able to do what I’d like to do.’
