For Its Second Year, North America’s 50 Best Bars Brings Its Ceremony To San Miguel De Allende

North America’s 50 Best Bars was inaugurated in 2022 in New York City to recognize the best of bars and bartenders within this continent. For 2023, this brand will mark its second year in a new destination — San Miguel de Allende.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this city within Mexico’s Central Highlands region will serve as the host location for this three-day event in early May.

On Thursday, May 4, North America’s 50 Best Bars will culminate with an awards ceremony honoring bartenders and bar owners in North America voted by the brand’s academy members. It will involve a countdown of winners, starting from 50 and climbing up to number one.

The evening’s presenter will be franky marshall, an NYC bartender and spirits educator whose hospitality industry resume includes Dead Rabbit, Clover Club, Monkey Bar and Le Boudoir Brooklyn.

“After last year’s star-studded launch in New York City, we are taking North America’s 50 Best Bars south of the border to celebrate Mexico’s world-leading bar scene,” explained Mark Sansom, content director for North America’s 50 Best Bars. “San Miguel de Allende has a long history as being a bastion of fine eating, drinking and celebrating and we can’t wait to bring the entire North American bar community to the UNESCO World Heritage City.”

Awards and Accolades

While the highlight of this event in San Miguel de Allende is the unveiling of North America’s 50 Best Bars 2023 list, the schedule will include other programming. A Bar Bartenders’ Feast will occur the night before the unveiling of this year’s list while a brunch for awards attendees will happen the day afterwards.

“We will be taking bartenders and brands on a grand tour around some simply stunning venues for our three events between May 3rd and 5th, and we can’t wait to get started,” said Sansom.

Prior to the May 4th ceremony, North America’s 50 Best Bars will announce the winners of two awards honoring outstanding achievements. Michter’s Art of Hospitality will recognize a bar selected by the members of the North America’s 50 Best Bars Academy. Its members were asked to name the bar where they received the single best hospitality experience during the award’s voting period.

The second award is the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender, which is voted upon by the bartenders behind those bars on this year’s list. These voters will name one peer who has done more to further the craft of bartending, in supporting the bar sector’s ongoing recovery in the wake of the pandemic.

Other changes reflected in this year’s ceremony involve the voting academy, to ensure a greater number of diverse voices are heard. Members of the academy consist of bartenders, bar owners, drinks media and well-traveled cocktail connoisseurs from the United States, the Caribbean, Canada and Mexico.
