IF THERE are two types of car on peoples’ minds right now, it’s SUVs and electric cars.
With the deadline for all new cars in the UK to be EVs approaching, a shift in preference to more upright and practical SUVs and current fuel costs, it’s no surprise that electric SUVs are proving popular.
Not so long ago there wasn’t a great choice of electric cars in the UK, let alone specifically electric SUVs.
In just the last five years the number of electric models and SUV-shaped EVs has grown hugely, with options for a range of budgets.
A good family EV SUV needs to be comfy and quiet to drive, practical inside and come with a decent range and charging capability.
We’ve driven them all and put together a list of our favourites.
1. Kia EV6
If you still think Kia and think ‘meh’ then think again. The EV6’s styling is a cross between an SUV and four-door coupe, but it’s striking to look at either way.
The Kia EV6 looks the part, is packed with tech and quality inside and will go up to 328 miles on a full charge. You’ll also easily fit a family and the luggage that goes with it inside.
It costs from £41,695.
Like Kia, the jokes about Skodas seem a distant memory.
These days they’re often smarter buys than the VWs on which they’re based, and the Enyaq is one of Skoda’s best models.
It’s roomy and practical, will go up to 331 miles and costs from £32,785.
3. Tesla Model Y
Is best not to make jokes about Teslas, because the people who love them tend to get a little angry.
They are great electric cars though – this Model Y is fit for a family in terms of space and will go up to 331 miles on a charge.
Starting at £55,990 it isn’t exactly a steal, but given the numbers on UK roads already and the long wait times for deliveries it seems nobody is particularly bothered.
4. Kia e-Niro
Full disclosure: there’s a new Kia e-Niro arriving very soon.
However, the new car’s specs aren’t hugely better than this current model’s and there are some great deals to be had on this one now there’s a new kid on the block.
The e-Niro has a range of around 280 miles (the new car’s is around 300) and it cost from just under £33,000 on the road.
5. MG ZS EV
MG is a very different car brand today than it once was.
Gone are the two-seat sports cars and in their place are some very decent electric cars – for the price.
The firm’s 5 estate is great and so too is this ZS EV SUV, which offers up to 273 miles of range for a shade under £30,000. There’s an even cheaper version that’s £2000 less with a shorter range too.
Inside you’ll find space for a family of four and decent boot for carrying their things.
