Influencer slammed for feeding baby raw grated liver, egg yolks for first meal

A former vegan YouTube star has been accused of putting her infant daughter “at risk” after feeding her a stomach-churning first meal.

A former vegan YouTube star has been accused of putting her infant daughter “at risk” after feeding her a stomach-churning first meal.

Mexican-American influencer Yovana Mendoza Ayres took to Instagram to share that her six-month-old’s first solid meal consisted of egg yolk and raw liver.

“Her very first food! Egg yolk and grated raw liver,” the 32-year-old wrote to 1.1 million followers on the platform, alongside a picture of the meal.

She was quickly slammed by her audience, with many disturbed at the prospect of feeding a baby raw meat.

“It wasn’t enough for this girl Yovana to put her own health at risk … Now she and her daughter’s dad are putting their baby’s health at risk by giving her raw food,” one commented.

“It’s sad how Yovana’s baby will suffer because of the eating disorders her mum has,” wrote another.

According to health experts, babies and young children are especially vulnerable to the bacteria that can cause food poisoning – which is often found in raw protein and eggs.

While advocates for the controversial paleo diet (based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Palaeolithic era) recommend that a baby’s first solid foods consist of egg yolks, cod liver oil and liver, as German child nutritionist Mathilde Kersting told Vice, raw liver is inappropriate for a baby.

It’s not the first time that Ayres – who made a name for herself on social media by extolling the virtues of a raw and vegan lifestyle – has run into controversy online.

In 2019, she appeared in another YouTuber’s video eating fish while in Bali, despite identifying her diet as plant-based.

She was swiftly slammed by her followers, and in an emotional apology explained why she had “misled” her fans.

“I know that so many of you trust me, you listen to me and you probably feel deceived and lied to – and you’re in your whole right to feel that,” Ayres said in the video.

“I’m human, I made a mistake, and I was not planning on hiding this from you. I was planning on telling you but on my terms and my time.”

Ayres revealed that she’d changed her diet after years of significant health problems that culminated in her doctors urging her to eat more food, including protein and eggs.

“I wasn’t ovulating. I was basically anaemic and my thyroid levels were low. It was really bad, but it was borderline,” she said.

Changing her diet “was really hard because of what I believed for so long, because of what I preached for so long”.

“I’m not going to tell you I’ve been eating eggs and fish and tell you everything is good. I’m saying that I’m trying to figure it out,” Ayres added.

“My heart is with the vegan community and I want to reiterate that the plant-based diet is not what made me sick.”
