James Gunn May Be Killing The Last Bits Of DC’s Snyderverse And Starting Over

With the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new “architects” of the DCU, it appears we are about to see some casualties as they look to wipe the slate more or less clean.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that one of the first victims of this new era is Wonder Woman 3 from Patty Jenkins, which is reportedly dead. But the overarching theme is that the DCEU and its current continuity may be shelved after the last couple of films here.

Among the potential casualties besides Wonder Woman 3:

  • Aquaman may end, though recent clues indicate that Jason Momoa could stay with DC potentially playing Lobo under Gunn.
  • Black Adam getting a sequel seems increasingly unlikely and Gunn’s arrival seems to directly counter The Rock’s proclamations about the film kicking off a new era for DC.
  • One thing sparked by Black Adam, the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, also appears to be up in the air, with plans for Man of Steel 2 perhaps not coming to fruition after such a big fuss was made about his return.

This isn’t to say it’s impossible not to keep Cavill as Superman, but the overall idea here seems to be starting over and killing off the last bits of the Snyderverse that started with Man of Steel. There appears to be some drama here between The Rock and the new DC heads who didn’t appreciate him going so hard for Cavill’s return and Black Adam’s prominence in the future when now all that may need to be scrapped. The article also notes that The Rock and Cavill are both repped by The Rock’s ex-wife and producing partner, Dany Garcia.

Things that seem safe right now:

Shazam: Fury of the Gods, which is only a few months away, and Blue Beetle coming in August. The Flash may also make it to release, but obviously that movie comes with its own metric ton of baggage because of Ezra Miller. Also, nothing about Matt Reeves’ The Batman sub-universe seems like it’s getting axed, including a sequel and a pair of spin-offs coming to HBO Max.

But yes, it is not terribly shocking that brand new DC management probably want to wind down the current DCEU which began all the way back in 2013, and has been a rollercoaster of successes and failures, and has lacked a cohesive vision, hence why they’re now in charge in the first place.

You can already see where this is going, as this will no doubt spark a huge outcry among the most vocal group of fans on the internet, the #RestoretheSnyderverse crowd, given that the Snyderverse seems to be explicitly being hunted down and killed with this new plan. But it’s a bizarre situation given that Snyder himself never seemed likely to return after his falling out with WB and he’s currently getting blank checks from Netflix to do whatever he wants over there.

Still, there are questions about putting James Gunn in charge of the universe, as while he’s made some great superhero movies, there’s a difference between doing that and leading an entire universe. You’ll recall that his last DC venture, Suicide Squad, despite high critical scores, dramatically underperformed at the box office. Gunn has been tweeting extremely non-mainstream DC characters since he took over, and if projects like Lobo and Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are any indication, he may be leaning into the weirder parts of DC rather than focusing on the core JLA members all over again. And that may come with some risk.

More to come as all this unfolds.
