Emotional Roger Federer wishes he could ‘go on forever’ as he prepares to retire from tennis

A historic night of tennis awaits in London as Roger Federer bids farewell to the sport and plays the final match of his career alongside Rafael Nadal in the Laver Cup. Federer, who will go down as perhaps the greatest champion in tennis history, will retire from the sport at the age of 41 and the moment has brought the sport and his rivals together at the O2 Arena.

Federer’s wish to play his final match with his great rival Nadal has been granted, setting up a special occasion with Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also competing for Team Europe. They will be taking on Team World, who are led by John McEnroe and have lost all four previous editions of the matchplay-style event.

Before tonight’s doubles, three singles matches will be played. Casper Ruud takes on Jack Sock in the opening match, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas against Diego Schwartzman. Murray then faces Alex De Minaur before the eyes of the world focus on Federer for a final time and the Swiss brings his legendary career to a close. A stunning inside-out forehand from Ruud from the tramlines, arrowed down the line, sees Sock face 0-30, but the American gets away with the hold, A couple of gifts from Ruud were followed by agressive play from Sock, and he stays alive.

Ruud then duly rattles off his own hold, finished with another lovely forehand down the line from what would normally be the backhand side.

The pressure is back on Sock.

Federer and Djokovic are back out, just as Ruud faces some pressure at 15-30. But Sock’s forehand lets him down again as he nets on a good opportunity on Ruud’s second serve. Sock then goes long and wide and Ruud edges back in front.

Hang on, though… Ruud comes into the net and says the umpire missed his own let! So the point is played again. And guess what? Ruud doubles faults!

It brings up deuce but Ruud quickly wins the game after all.

Tiafoe gets out his seat once more with a ‘let’s go!’ as Sock holds, keeping himself in this. There looks to be some chemistry between the Americans, ahead of their doubles match agaisnt Federer and Nadal later.

The O2 Arena is pretty full for this opening match of the day, the crowd just needs a spark that Sock almost provided by levelling at the end of the first set.

That’s no slight on Ruud, though, who is putting together a controlled and clean performance full of authority. He gets his latest hold with a cracking forehand across court.

Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray have simply left him to it.

Now Murray and Nadal have gone off in search of food, leaving just Tsitsipas on the bench for Europe.

Team World need to stick with Sock, though, as Ruud puts the pressure on with a backhand winner.

It moves him to 30-30, but Sock responds with a winner that catches the line – and another forehand winner gets him level.

But here comes Ruud… the backhand has been his shot so far and he plants another winner down the line to get to 0-30. Sock then runs around his own backhand, but the forehand is into the net!

Three set points… Ruud gives away the first with a gift and then Sock hangs in the point to save the second. And Sock saves the third with a great serve out wide!

It brings up the first deuce of the match – but there goes the set! It’s rather handed away, as Sock doubles faults and then puts a forehand into the net.

Ruud was the better player for the majority of the opener there, but Sock earned his chance only to give it straight back.

Superb from Sock! At 0-15, he gets the O2 on its feet with a brilliant exchange of volleys at the net, sliding to put away the backhand the line!

It gets Tiafoe running out onto the court! Sock then follows it with another volley, Tiafoe again running out for the high five with his team mate.

Suddenly, he gets three break points – and Sock takes the second with a backhand down the line! That’s got the match going, Team World are back in this opening set.

Tiafoe is just generally loving this.

Sock moves into the net well to put away a high volley – if only he had that touch at the start of the set. He then puts away the overhead after the rally of the match so far, which was really well contructed by the American. He stays in the set with the ace and now Ruud will try to see this out.

Federer, meanwhile, has joined Djokovic in leaving the court for some lunch.
