Lil Nas X has apologised after being accused of transphobia.

The musician, 23, is known for hit songs such as Call Me By Your Name and Old Time Road, as well as posting everything and anything on his social media.

Now the singer has issued an apology after he was hit with backlash to a post he made joking that he had undergone gender-affirming surgery.

This week Nas – real name Montero Lamar Hill – shared a snap to Twitter of a woman who looked like him, writing in the caption: ‘THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS.’

He was instantly criticised for appearing to mock the trans community, transition and surgery, and accused by some of transphobia.

At first Nas hit back, replying to one critic with: ‘I’m literally just saying she looks like me y’all cannot be f****n serious.’

Nas first defended himself by saying he only mean that the woman in the picture looked like him (Picture: Getty Images)

And replying to another who asked ‘why did he have to mention surgery,’ he replied: ‘Because she has t***ies? are u dense? (sic).’

Both of the above tweets have since been deleted, though screenshots continue to make their way across social media, and Nas has now issued an apology.

He wrote: ‘apologies to the trans community i def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. much love to you guys. sorry.’

The apology was welcomed by some, however others thought it did not go far enough, and Nas replied to one woman who suggested he apologised ‘in material ways that include money,’ with the words: ‘girl eat my a**.’

Nas himself is a part of the LGBT+ community, having come out as gay in 2019 with a heartfelt letter to his younger self.

He was most recently linked to one of his backup dancers, and though they have since gone their separate ways Nas insisted they were ‘still on really good terms.’

He told GQ in an interview at the time: ‘I love him to death. He’s the best.

‘I feel it was the most serious relationship I’ve ever had.

‘It’s a responsibility. I’ve been wanting somebody for so long and wanting somebody to love for so long, but it’s a real responsibility, and you have to give this person your time.’
