Rosie O’Donnell ‘never got over’ Ellen DeGeneres hurting her feelings

Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about how Ellen DeGeneres hurt her feelings, after a conversation The Ellen Show host had with Larry King.

Ellen’s talk-show, which began in 2003, came to an end in May this year, as the 64-year-old said a tearful goodbye and shared her history on the famous set.

During its 19 seasons, Rosie revealed that she had never been invited on as a guest until the end of its run, despite the 60-year-old inviting Ellen onto her talk show.

Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Rosie admitted to the tension between her and Ellen.

Andy asked of Rosie had been asked to appear on the show, to which she bluntly responded: ‘No,’ saying she was ‘never a guest’ during the 20-year-run of the Ellen Show.

She continued: ‘We had a little bit of a weird thing, and after my show went off the air and hers was coming on the air, Larry King was on with Ellen and he said, “Whatever happened to Rosie O’Donnell”‘.

Quoting Ellen, Rosie continued: ‘”I don’t know Rosie, we’re not friends.’”

Rosie reflected on how she felt at that moment, saying: ‘I was in bed with Kelly [her ex-wife] and I went, “Did I just hear that? Or was that a hallucination, auditory voice in my…”

‘No and that’s what happened, and it hurt my feelings like a baby and I never really got it over it.’

Andy replied: ‘But they also never asked you to go on.’

‘Well no, they asked me once towards the end,’ Rosie continued, adding: ‘I was going to go on for SMILF but I wanted to bring someone on with me because I thought it might be a little less awkward, and they didn’t want to do that.

‘I wish her all good things in her life and that she should be well, but I never did it,’ Rosie concluded.

This comes after Rosie spoke out about the controversy surrounding the Ellen DeGeneres show, which opened an internal investigation over claims that the working environment was ‘toxic’.

Speaking on the Busy Phillips Is Doing Her Best podcast, Rosie admitted she felt for Ellen amid the backlash, and has compassion.

Rosie said on the podcast: ‘You can’t fake your essence. And that’s why I have compassion for Ellen, right?

‘I have compassion even though, you know, I hear the stories and I understand. I think she has some social awkwardness.’

The show had faced numerous allegations across 2020, with Buzzfeed reporting that staff complained of ‘racism and intimidation’ behind the scenes.

Following the reports, Ellen held a Zoom meeting with 200 members of her staff to address the claims.

She later apologised to staff in an internal letter after the investigation confirmed ‘deficiencies in day-to-day management’ on set of her chat show.

‘I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect,’ the note, first acquired by Hollywood Reporter, said.

‘Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry.’
