The guys behind South Fremantle Brewing have not only opened the doors to a new venture in Fremantle’s FOMO precinct but are, for the most part, the ones behind the taps as well.
Alley Bar co-owner Eamonn Barnes said the group was happy to staff the bar themselves and would happily chat all things booze and brewing with anyone who walks in.
He said setting up in the heart of Fremantle had proved too good an opportunity to pass up even though their brand is South Fremantle.
“In the FOMO area, our liquor licence covers the other food vendors so you can come and grab a beer from us and take it down to where you’ve ordered your lunch, which is really cool,” he explained.
Not that diners have to leave Alley Bar for a bite, given there’s an in-house menu designed around the South Fremantle frothies.
“We’ve taken over two tenancies in FOMO, one is the bar and the other is the food tenancy that we’ve leased to Nomadical,” Mr Barnes said. “We gave the chef Karl Nicholson our beers to try and he’s made his menu with the idea that it would be paired with our beers.”
While they’ve only signed a short start-up lease for now, Mr Barnes said the hope was to host events like “recovery breakfasts” to bring together a “melting pot of people”.
“There is the potential for it to become a long-term thing if it goes well and the people like it,” he said.
“We are looking at potentially doing like a bar and breakfast thing because we can we can serve alcohol in the morning.
“We’ve got this idea of making a simple menu that would be similar to the old dockworker’s breakfast of steak and eggs and a dark beer that they’d have at seven in the morning when they’d come off a night shift.
“So you can stop in for breakfast, either on your way home or on your way out.”
The new digs at FOMO is further proof of how far South Fremantle Brewing has come since 2016 when five friends, including Mr Barnes, realised their money-saving venture in university had the potential to become something big.
“We thought that we could save money by brewing beer ourselves rather than buying it,” Mr Barnes laughed.
“We’d all been friends for years and were all individually home brewing and brewing for house parties around Freo, so we decided to pool our resources together and make a clandestine home brew set-up and brew beer together instead.
“And we sort of set ourselves a couple of steps along the way; you know, step one, get a beer on the market, then expand into a few more venues and create a dedicated core range, things that could keep us growing.”
Alley Bar is currently open Friday to Sunday from midday to 8pm.
