Sydney is hoping to break a new world record on Sunday, when more than 2000 swimmers are planning to compete in a nude swimming race in the Harbour.
To break the world record Sydney Skinny, which will be held at Cobblers Beach in Mosman, will need more than 2505 people to get their kit off – a record set in Ireland in 2018.
Sunday marked the return of the event after three years due to Covid restrictions, and the event organisers are bullish following a recent international art installation that saw more than 2500 people strip-off in Bondi in the name of art.
“After a three-year hiatus, and it being the event’s 10th anniversary, we think this is the year we might break some records and prove to the world how vibrant and spirited Sydney can be,” Nigel Marsh, founder of the Sydney Skinny, said.
“Let’s be clear – it’s an all ticketed, no spectator event in a secluded national park where everyone is clothed on land and covered by water or a sarong when naked,” Marsh said.
“ If you’ve ever been apprehensive about doing something so daring – you will be looked after – and you’ll have the time of your life.”
“The recent Spencer Tunick nude installation saw more the 2,500 people strip off for a photo – and all of these people will be invited to participate in our fun 300m harbour swim,” Marsh said.
This year’s Sydney Skinny is also in collaboration with Skin Check Champions.
Singer-songwriter Casey Burgess, who will be competing in the Sydney Skinny, said her loved ones will be front of mind when she hits the waters in Cobblers on Sunday.
“Skin cancer has rocked my world countless times,’ Burgess said.
“My Mum had a very serious melanoma on her leg which resulted in her needing to have a very deep cut to remove the melanoma, it even required some muscle tissue to be removed,” she said.
“After that, she’s now endured 30 precancerous removals.”
Burgess said her father and grandfather had also been impacted.
Event organiser Tania Taylor said the Maroubra Surf Life Saving team will be present and keeping a watchful eye over proceedings.
