Telangana BJP: BJP plans show of strength in Telangana on July 3

After its national executive committee meeting scheduled to be held in Hyderabad from July 2, the BJP is planning to put up a show of strength by holding a mega rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior ministers and chief ministers of all BJP-ruled states on July 3. The rally is aimed at boosting the BJP’s campaign in Telangana, which is headed for election next year, said people aware of the matter.

The rally is likely to be held in Secunderabad parade ground, and a huge stage is likely to be put up that can accommodate the PM, parliamentary board members of the party including ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, and also the CMs of the BJP-ruled states. To strengthen the party’s organisation at the grassroots, nearly 119 national-level leaders will also be given responsibilities to monitor the minutest workings of the party organisation at the ground level.

A BJP functionary said plans are being worked out to organise the visits of national leaders to different constituencies of the State too, and showcase the party’s local leadership in the state, which includes four MPs and three MLAs. “Tasks have already been assigned to members in the State to go to each constituency and understand the challenges there. The reports will be presented to the party leaders when they visit.”

“All state BJP presidents and 350 other national delegates will also be present. Every aspect of the meeting will be steeped in Telangana’s traditions. The CMs will also present the BJP’s model of governance which will lift the spirits of our karyakartas (workers),” said the functionary, who did not wish to be identified.

Senior local leaders of the party such as Shiv Prakash and Arvind Menon have been tasked with making the arrangement foolproof to make a powerful impact on the people of the state, and party’s national organisation secretary BL Santhosh has been taking meetings in this regard.

BJP general secretary and Telangana in-charge Tarun Chugh has been holding meetings with the state executive committee members of the BJP and is again scheduled to visit the State next week. Meanwhile, the party has also directed its office-bearers in the state to launch a special donation campaign and work at strengthening its base at the booth level. This comes even as there is speculation that Telangana CM K Chandrasekhara Rao is contemplating launching a national forum to counter the “challenges posed by the BJP and Hindutva”. A party worker said the BJP has already begun work on grading the more than 34,000 booths in the state as ‘weak’, ‘challenging’ or ‘good’ to fine-tune the campaign.

“We are also looking at the best faces from TRS and Congress that can join us. We already have some in mind, but we are working out the details,” said a senior functionary.

Political analyst Zakeer Sheikh said the BJP will have to work very hard to take on the might of a well-entrenched TRS and the Congress which still retains a base in Telangana, specifically in the south. “There are admirers of Modi here too, but the TRS is very strong. The focus needs to be on micro management and setting a narrative that people of the state relate to,” said Sheikh.
