The 2020 Netflix series, which is led by the 26-year-old actress, follows chess whizz Beth, an abandoned child who finds solace and order in her orphanage when she takes an interest in the board game.
In the years that follow, friends and fellow chess players help Beth Harmon as she competes to become the best chess player in the world.
However, as she grows up, sometimes feelings and situations get complicated.
On Monday, The Menu star appeared to confirm that the hit drama would be returning for a second installment in a now deleted tweet which read: ‘The Queen’s Gambit Season 2.’
Naturally, devoted fans were taken aback by the tease, but that joy was short-lived after Anya shut down the hype.
‘My Twitter has been hacked. Apologies for all inconveniences. It’s not me!,’ she wrote via Instagram Stories.
This wasn’t the update fans were hoping for, and fans took to social media to express their disappointment.
‘She can’t play with my feelings like this,’ one person wrote.
However, another fan who was clearly satisfied with how the series ended added: ‘Nature feels healed. cause S2 would be so silly.’
Anya previously admitted that there’s not been any discussion to have a comeback, but if there was, she’d be ready to have a chat with the filmmakers.
Speaking to Deadline, the actress said: ‘It’s so surreal and very wonderful that people want a second season, because we never thought about it, there was no discussion about it.
‘That said, never say never in Hollywood.
‘It would be very interesting to see how Beth would be as a mother, now that she’s sober and more cognisant of the demons that pull her down.’
The Queen’s Gambit is available to stream on Netflix.
