I have often asked God what it means to walk with Him, especially because the bible says that Enoch walked with God and so he didn’t die – he was just taken away!
“Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.”
Genesis 5:25 (NIV)
“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.”
Hebrews 11:5 (NIV)
We know that without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6), and we know that to live according to His Kingdom principles, we need to trust and obey. But it seems that “walking with God” is another level of relationship with God – something to be eagerly sought after!
Amos 3:3 (NKJV) Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
What does “walking in agreement” mean?
It means that you totally agree with God on every aspect, and that you base your life on the truth that there is only One God, and that He alone is your Lord and Master.
It means that you recognize that He has graciously chosen and redeemed you, so that you live your life in complete gratitude and surrender to Him, regardless of circumstances or feelings.
Thus, it is not about religious obedience, but about intimacy, oneness, and complete harmony with and trust in God.
Often people mistake Christians for being religious. However, Christianity is not about religion, but about relationship. It is the pure delight of “knowing” (in the intimate sense of the word), the Living God. It means that He has become our God and we have become His children!
Amos 3:2 (NLT) “From among all the families on the earth, I have been intimate with you alone. Leviticus 26:12 (CEV) I will walk with you–I will be your God, and you will be my people. How can we walk harmoniously together with such a righteous God?
Walking with the father
Enoch was an archetype of Jesus, who walked perfectly with His perfect Father. There was a consistent harmonious agreement between them as we see in His statement: “not my will by Thy will be done” (Luke 22:42)!
Through Christ’s righteousness, we can walk with God, by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. Behold – the old has gone, the new has come (2 Corinthians5:17)!
Through His gift of regeneration and the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification, we can experience the deep joy of walking harmoniously with God.
Obedience, is not a condition of covenant but an obligation
“Condition” means that the contract is only good if it is upheld by the other. “Obligation” means that there is a required response to the covenant which is irrevocably in place.
By being covenanted with Him as His dearly beloved children, we agree with Him that He alone rules and reigns! But as His dearly beloved, we now have great “responsibility”. He has given us the ABILITY to RESPOND to Him.
Luke 12:48 (NIV) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
We are not to take our position in Christ lightly!
Instead, we need to take up our God-given responsibility and respond in complete surrender to Him. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). We now need to choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19)!
Day by day, moment by moment, even when it is tough! God is faithful – choose to walk with Him.
Our heavenly Father, what a joy it is that we get to walk this life hand in hand with You.
Oh Abba – how do people cope without you? Your presence is so real; your grace so palpable; your fellowship so sweet!
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for making it possible for us to be one with you. You are our delight!
