Wrestling legend Lanny Poffo has died aged 68.

The former WWE and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) star – who also appeared for the likes of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) over his memorable career – was the younger brother of late champion ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage.

The sad news was confirmed by Hall of Famer ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, who tweeted on Thursday: ‘With a very, very heavy heart, I’ve been asked to let everyone know about the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Poffo, The Genius. RIP Lanny’.

Tributes are already pouring in for the late star, with fans paying their respects on social media.

‘This is very sad. At least he is reunited with his brother and family in heaven,’ replied one fan, while another added: ‘Oh man. Very sad to read this. RIP Lanny Absolutely loved his stories and interviews’.

‘Rest in peace! Now you can be with Randy again!’ another said, while someone else commented: ‘Sad to hear we lost another of our childhood heroes. May he rest in peace.’

Poffo and his brother Savage both joined WWE around the same time in 1985, with Poffo inducing Savage into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2015, after his death.

Poffo first made his wrestling debut in 1974, in the All-South Wrestling Alliance, before moving onto the National Wrestling Alliance that same year.

He went on to wrestle in the Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling in 1978, where he wrestled his brother for the very first time, defating him by disqualification.

Before wrestling for WWF, he took part in Mid-South Wrestling and Continental Wrestling Association.

As well as wrestling, Poffo has published two books, one of which is a collection of poetry in which he raises awareness of drugs and alcohol.

He also released biographical comic The Genius Lanny Poffo in 2018.
